Frog Pond History
On May 6, 1878, German speaking pioneers of this area met to form "Die Deutsche Evangelische Reformierte Meridian Gemeinde des Clackamas County Oregon." Over the years our name has evolved into "Meridian United Church of Christ," but we are affectionately known as "Frog Pond Church."
In the old days there truly was a pond just north of here. Although the pond is gone, the frogs remain. The original sanctuary was built on this three-acre corner in 1880 with great hand-hewn timbers for foundation beams. The bell tower, with its historic Aurora Colony bell, was added in 1894. Meridian House was built in 1950. Formerly the parsonage, it is now used for classroom space. Samaritan House, adjacent to the old sanctuary, was added in 1954. Many people in the wider community helped build Samaritan House. It will always be available for community use.
The carving of the Good Samaritan above the fireplace, the granite statue outside under the birch tree, and the wooden cross hanging over the center aisle in the sanctuary were done by our friend, the late Leroy Setziol. Other works of art, including the communion table, have been fashioned by gifted folk in the congregation. The wall between Samaritan House and the original sanctuary was removed in 1981. An addition, Koinonia House, was built in 1987 to add new classrooms, fellowship space and offices. A new sanctuary was completed and opened in 2000.
