Coffee Creek Backpacks
Our church has donated about forty backpacks per month (since it opened) to the inmates who are leaving Coffee Creek. Some have families, but many have no one - they have burned their bridges very well. All get a backpack. The prison only gives them sweats and bus fare when they leave. So, the backpacks really help these women out.
What do they put into them?
Notepads, pencils, pens, paperback books, stamps, paper, envelopes, postcards, combs, brushes, chapstick, tampax, bottle of water, snack food (granola bars, for example), calendars, deoderant, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush, toothpaste, lotion, and/or anything else you can think of. The people who have been doing this go to garage sales or big sales and get what they can. They stuff the backpacks with what they have. Also, if you have gently used backpacks or satchels, those work, too. If you can not get anything purchased, you could donate money to them (make the check out to Meridian UCC)
